MOSQUITOS
Malaria, the biggest killer of humans in Africa.
Mosquitoes are considered a nuisance but they are HIGH RISK carriers of killer diseases such as malaria, elephantiasis, yellow fever and encephalitis. Termites are important decomposers. Termites break down tough plant fibers, recycling dead and decaying trees into new soil. These hungry insects are vital to the health of our ecosystems. As they tunnel, termites also aerate and improve the soil. It just so happens that we build our homes from termite food: Wood. Mosquitoes are best known for the habits of the adult females which often feed on blood to help generate their eggs. The lesser-known side is that mosquito adults, males and females, also feed on nectar from flowers. Mosquitoes typically breed in stagnant water, as running water such as streams wash out their eggs, larvae, and pupae. Ideal habitats for breeding are anywhere water may accumulate for more than three days for example, old tires, puddles, drains etc. Adult mosquitoes prefer to be most active from dusk until dawn but with sufficient cloud cover or in shaded areas they will jump at the chance to eat.

MALARIA MOSQUITO
‘Anopheles arabiensis’
The deadliest of mosquitoes. While Anopheles mosquitoes look like other mosquitoes, there are four easy to see differences between Anopheles and other mosquitoes. First, the Anopheles mosquitoes have a pair of mouthpart palps that are about the same length as the proboscis. Second, the female Anopheles mosquito lays individual eggs on the water’s surface, not egg rafts. Third, Anopheles mosquito larvae orient their body parallel to the water’s surface when taking in air, unlike others who orient more or less perpendicular to the water’s surface. Fourth, Anopheles female adults position themselves at about a 45 degree angle to the host’s skin when taking a blood meal, unlike most other mosquitoes that assume more of a parallel position with the host’s skin when feeding.

HOUSE MOSQUITO
‘Culex fatigans’
A medium-sized mosquito and is brown in colour. The body is about 3.96 to 4.25 mm long. While the main body is brown, the proboscis, thorax, wings, and tarsi are darker than the rest of the body. The head is light brown with the lightest portion in the center. The antennae and the proboscis are about the same length, but in some cases, the antennae are slightly shorter than the proboscis. The flagellum has 13 segments that may have few or no scales. The scales of the thorax are narrow and curved. The abdomen has pale, narrow, rounded bands on the basal side of each tergite. Males can be differentiated from females in having large palps and feathery antennae.

BUSH MOSQUITO
‘Aedes aegyptii’
They are carries of yellow fever. The body is black and white and measures approximately 5 mm in length. Their legs are striped black and white. They are faster moving and more aggressive than other species of mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are most active during the day and require very little water to breed.
